Teaching English in Japan

Monday, October 27, 2025
11:30am-12:30pm at COB2 267
Hosted by Professor Miki Y. Ishikida, Ph.D

Do you want to teach English in Japan?

The number of Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) has been increasing after elementary schools started teaching English in 2011. As of 2023, 18,000 ALTs are teaching English at school in Japan.

The Japan Exchange & Teaching Program

This talk presents an overview about ALTs and English Education in Japan, including her classroom observation in Fukuchi elementary school in Japan.

We will see the slides from Ann, an alumna of UC Merced, about her ALT life in Japan! Her high school students are exchanging their letters and videos with my JPN003 students here at UC Merced.

We will also view a video of a school day of an ALT in a middle school.
