Summer Research Program

The University of California, Merced (UC Merced) seeks to increase research ties with Mexican universties in the area of climate research. As part of this effort, through our Unvergradaute Research Opportunity Center (UROC), UC Merfced invit4es students enrolled in mexican universties who are interested in climate research and considering graduate study to apply for a nine week summer research program at UC Me in su 23.

 

Program dates: June 5 - August 4, 2023

Student Support: UC Merced will cover all program fees and room and broad. Students will be housed in double occupancy room in a residence hall on UC Merced's campus and a meal plan will be provided.

APPLICATION

Application Eligibility: Applicants must be:

  • Recommended to apply to the program by their home institution ...
  • In good academic standing,
  • [majoring in ?]
  • Have sufficient English language skills

English Language Proficiency: The US Department of State requires J-1 exchange visitors to have “sufficient proficiency in the English language, as determined by an objective measurement of English language proficiency, successfully to participate in his or her program and to function on a day-to-day basis." [22 CFR 62.10(a)(2)]. Proficiency can be demonstrated via:

  • Certification by a sufficient language test score:
    • IELTS overall band score of 7 or higher
    • TOEFL test score must be 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based) or 68 (internet based iBT)
    • Tests must have been taken with the past 5 years
  • Certification by an academic institution or English language school:
    • Certifying letter must:
      • Verify the exchange visitor possesses English language proficiency high enough to function daily within the UC Merced position and within the local U.S. community.
      • Be issued on letterhead in English within the past 2 years.
      • Include signature from school official.
  • Certification by a sponsoring UC Merced professor

Application Materials: All application materials must be submitted electronically (see link below) and should include: 

  • Unofficial Transcript(s),
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Personal statement (approx. 500 words) addressing why you want to participate in the program, your future career goals, and how participating in this program will help you achieve your career goals,
  • Contact info for 2 references (they will only be contacted if you are a finalist)
